Privacy policy

Closer is a check-in app built to avoid tracking people. This page explains exactly what it stores and why. Last updated: July 25, 2026.

The short version

What we store

Account details. A Closer account id, your display name, and - if you sign in with Google or Apple - the email address from that account. You can also use Closer with just a name, without connecting Google or Apple.

Your PIN. Stored as a salted hash so it can be verified without us being able to read it.

Check-in data. Your schedules, the shared confirmation number for each connection, confirmations, missed check-ins, and need-help signals, with timestamps.

Connections and invites. Invite codes you generate, who accepted them, and the display names of people in your circle.

Phone numbers, only if you add them. If you enter a phone number so the call and text shortcuts work, it is stored on that connection. This is optional and you can remove it.

Notification token. A push token from Firebase Cloud Messaging so check-in prompts and alerts can reach your device.

Purchases. If you buy Closer Plus, we store your subscription status, the product purchased, and the purchase identifier from Google Play or the App Store. We never see your card details.

What we do not store

This website

If you sign in with Google on this site to claim free lifetime Plus or to pre-register for iOS, we store your account id, email address, display name, and the time you signed up. That lets us apply the entitlement to the right account, limit it to one per account, and email you when the iOS app is ready.

Who processes your data

Closer runs on Google Firebase (Authentication, Firestore, Cloud Functions, and Cloud Messaging). Purchases are processed by Google Play or the Apple App Store. These providers process data on our behalf to run the service; we do not send your data to advertisers or data brokers.

How long we keep it

Account and check-in data is kept while your account exists. Delete your account in the app and the associated data is removed, apart from anything we have to keep for billing or fraud records.

Your choices

Children

Closer is designed for adults and families, and is not directed at children under 13. A parent can use Closer to check in with an older child who has their own account and consents to it.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that affects what we collect, we will update this page and change the date above.
